The Iron Horse (18 Center St., Northampton, MA) 20 Center Street Northampton 01060 MA US | Margaret Glaspy w/ Anna Tivel at The Iron Horse on Thursday, September 24 2026 In an era of excess and endless distraction, the New York-based singer/songwriter Margaret Glaspy rejects the noise in favor of something far more essential. On the self-possessed title track for her new album I Am Both Glaspy offers an ardent refusal of any outside pressure to compromise her multidimensionality. “I wrote ‘I Am Both’ a while ago; the story is based on a female character that I look up to deeply—a woman who contains multitudes while seeing reality very clearly,” says Glaspy. “It can feel safer to try to fit myself into a category, but I find that embracing my own complexity is much healthier for me.” That embrace of complexity runs throughout the album’s eleven tracks. In the making of I Am Both Glaspy stepped away from social media and soon discovered a clarity of mind she hadn’t experienced in years, followed by a sustained burst of creative momentum. As she penned her lyrics in longhand and then polished them up on a typewriter, Glaspy assembled a selection of songs that span from fictional vignettes to unguarded self- revelation to empathetic observation of the troubled world around her. Produced by Joe Henry (the three-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer known for his work with luminaries like Aimee Mann and Joan Baez), I Am Both ultimately stands as a striking new statement from one of the modern music canon’s most formidable songwriters. “When I started writing for this record I had a goal of getting my practice back—to walk the walk in terms of how I envision myself as a songwriter,” says Glaspy, a Northern California-bred artist who made her debut with 2016’s lavishly acclaimed Emotions and Math. “At first it was really hard to break that addiction to social media, but after a while something shifted. It felt like I’d gotten back to original thought instead of being under the influence of so many outside opinions. It was life-changing.” Her fourth full-length album, I Am Both emerged from three days of sessions at New York City’s Reservoir Studios, where Glaspy recorded live with drummer/percussionist Jay Bellerose (Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss), keyboardist Patrick Warren (Tracy Chapman, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen), and bassist Ross Gallagher (Paula Cole, Grails). “I always think of myself as more of a photographer than a sculptor in the studio—it’s about capturing the moment rather than layering and building things up over time, and Joe has a similar mentality when it comes to recording,” says Glaspy, who first connected with Henry at a T Bone Burnett-curated tribute to Bob Dylan at New York’s Town Hall in 2022. “There was an incredible chemistry with the band and the whole process felt electric, so a lot of what you hear on the album is the first take.” The follow-up to 2023’s Echo the Diamond (hailed by Uncut as “songs that glint like shards of glass yet brim with love, grief, courage, existential doubt and all the stuff that makes us human”), I Am Both brings Glaspy’s disarmingly direct vocals and eloquent guitar work to a cathartic form of folk-leaning indie-rock. In a potent introduction to the LP’s luminous immediacy, the album opens on “Michigan”—a lush and lacerating piece of storytelling that imagines a post- breakup escape to the Midwest. “I was in Michigan a couple years back and had a really beautiful time, and thought about how New Yorkers sometimes fantasize about the countryside as a retreat from the intensity of the city,” Glaspy says. “It turned into a song about someone going through a bad breakup, and then deciding to just leave the city behind.” Like “Michigan,” a number of songs on I Am Both unfold as finely detailed story fragments that privilege impression over exposition, each one etched with a precise emotional truth. On the wildly romantic “That Rose,” Glaspy spins distanced longing into something gloriously surreal (“I dreamt you looked into the clouds like they were my eyes / You made them blush—the clouds got shy”). “It was fun to write a love story where the jealousy is almost sweet.” One of several songs featuring Glaspy’s soulful performance on harmonica, “Common Ground” tilts toward a Dylan-esque acerbic wit. “That song feels relevant to the culture these days. There’s a tendency to either put people on a pedestal or dismiss them entirely, instead of perceiving them as human beings or using our own reasoning.” Another outward-looking and galvanizing track, “Martin Luther King Jr.” reframes passages from a 1957 sermon by the legendary civil rights leader, recasting his wisdom in light of present-day emergencies like the U.S. housing crisis. “I’ve been listening to Martin Luther King’s speeches for a long time, and I find so much inspiration in how transcendent his public speaking is,” says Glaspy. “His work is obviously very pertinent to what we’re going through right now in America and the world over.” Throughout I Am Both, Glaspy reveals one of the more thrilling outcomes of deepening her creative practice: a commitment to following her own internal logic when structuring songs. On the slow-building and softly powerful “Reminder,” she contends with her own smallness against the scale of others’ suffering, rendering her inner monologue in a rush of unbroken syntax (“Hope can only get me so far / I also have to be willing to catch a few scars / And I also have to be willing to apologize / And I also have to be willing to scrutinize / And I also have to be willing to not be right / But I also have to be willing to fight, fight, fight”). “That song’s a message to myself for when it feels like I’m doing nothing of value, reminding me that it’s important to keep showing up in lots of little ways instead of giving up altogether,” says Glaspy. “It’s an example of something I never would’ve written if I were still praying to the gods who told me everything needs to be neat and tidy and symmetrical.” That sense of self-acceptance extends beyond identity and into Glaspy’s broader philosophy: one that increasingly resists the cultural appetite for hierarchy and ascent. “In any industry, success is measured by climbing as high as you possibly can, but these days I think of music as something more like a public service,” she says. “You show up in city after city and you bring the music with you, and hopefully it reaches whoever needs to hear it. I feel really honored to be of service in that way.” Anna Tivel is a Portland, Oregon-based, internationally touring songwriter who is forever drawn to the quiet stories of ordinary life. The characters and imagery that populate her writing are full of breath and vivid color. With six full-length albums out and a seventh on the way, Anna has been likened to a short story writer and praised by NPR, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and others for her keen observations of the human condition. In fact, Ann Powers of NPR Music had this to say, "Anna Tivel is just one of my absolute favorite living songwriters. Her writing on [Outsiders] is at the same level as Paul Simon when he wrote 'The Boxer' and 'American Tune'"

He gained an avid following for his swinging samba-funk tinged with Brazilian soul, releasing seven solo albums and earning a Latin Grammy nomination for Na Veia, his collaboration with samba legend Arlindo Cruz. He further raised his profile by co-writing the theme song for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Startled by the political climate in Brazil in 2019, Rogê decided to relocate to Los Angeles. That year he had the great fortune of recording an album with Seu Jorge in 2019 — and the great misfortune of seeing it released in early 2020 just as the pandemic hit. But his star is rising lately. His translations of traditional samba into a more modern brew infused with soul, funk and reggae are finding new audiences. The Latin Grammy nominated guitarist is considered one of the most talented samba musicians of his generation.

Panic Shack

The Iron Horse (18 Center St., Northampton, MA) 20 Center Street Northampton 01060 MA US | Panic Shack at The Iron Horse on Friday, September 25 2026 If there's one thing Panic Shack know, it's how to have a good time. Comprised of Sarah Harvey (vocals), Meg Fretwell (guitar/backing vocals), Romi Lawrence (guitar/backing vocals), Em Smith (bass/backing vocals) and Nick Williams (drums), the band formed in 2018 as a middle-finger to the “members-only club” atmosphere of indie and punk scenes – not just because they’re male-dominated, but because they make playing music seem out of reach or, even worse, boring. “Boys make it look so hard,” Em says, rolling her eyes. “Whenever I see someone on the floor fiddling with their pedals with a face like a slapped arse I think, you're making this look so unattainable and it’s actually so fucking easy.” This carefree approach gives Panic Shack’s music the same effect as popping a bottle of Prosecco – explosive, intoxicating, and delightfully chaotic. With barely any music available online, they built a word-of-mouth following off the back of their live shows, which have been praised for fusing “thrashy early LA-style punk with choreography that owes something to the Go-Go’s and Iron Maiden all at once” (The Guardian). That quickly snowballed into tours with the likes of Bob Vylan and Soft Play, and festival appearances at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Green Man, End of the Road, SXSW and more. Released in 2022, their acclaimed Baby Shack EP bottled the lightning they have on stage, cementing their ability to blend killer hooks with a contagious sense of humour. The first vinyl pressing – splattered pink, obviously – sold out almost instantly. To be released in July, Panic Shack’s self-titled debut album represents a serious level up. Linking up with producer Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Yard Act), it finds the band expanding their gutsy punk sound into fuller territory, packed with vocal harmonies, synths, electronic experimentation, and even a trumpet at one point. Over 11 breakneck tracks, Panic Shack never lets up or loses momentum. It opens with the rising sound of chatter, glass clinking and laughter, most of which was recorded in the beer garden at an Amyl & the Sniffers gig. Fizzing with the anticipation of walking into a club at the start of a night out, it feels like party-punk’s answer to the intro of Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’. From there, the bouncy bass line and blistering guitars of ‘Girl Band Starter Band’ kick in, and the band pulls you into their world the way a friend would grab your hand and drag you onto the dancefloor. “Four iced lattes / Sit outside / Smoke a rolly / Sun is shining / People watching / Things are moving / Got us talking...” Sarah chants, the pace ramping up like a heartbeat beginning to race. Across the album, the lyrics are conversational, often stemming from in-jokes, while the subject matter spans the full range of the feminine experience. Whether it’s everyday stuff like browsing Hinge (‘Unhinged’) and remembering everything you need to stick in your bag because your dress has no pockets (‘Pockets’), or broader societal issues like the impact of toxic tabloid culture on body image (‘Gok Wan’) and sexual harassment (‘SMELLARAT’), no topic is too frivolous or too vast. There’s no point-scoring or political commentary to be made here, though. The songs spring naturally from the way they live their lives, which is, more often than not, with a great deal of enjoyment. Irresistible because of their simplicity and charming because of their familiarity, Panic Shack are the answer to a question that, quite frankly, isn’t asked often enough: what if the funniest girls you know started a band? The sonic equivalent to a coming-of-age film unfolding over a single night, Panic Shack takes the shape of a bender, beginning by approaching a bar and ending with an impassioned speech at sunrise about how much you love your friends. Swerving the expected topics of sex and romance, the entire album revolves around the ionic bond between the four girls. “This band has taken us on the most mental journey that nobody else will fully understand,” says Meg. It’s only right, then, that their debut marks a celebration of that as much as it does the start of a new journey entirely. “We've always wanted people to come in and be part of our world, and this album is every part of who Panic Shack are. The party side, the angry side... It’s a story about us, really,” Sarah explains. “That’s why we named it after the band. We can't help but be ourselves.”

Think Bob Dylan, Fairport Convention, or the Chieftains. “For Japanese people, min’yō is both the closest and most distant folk music,” says bandleader Katsumi Tanaka. “We may not feel it in our daily urban lives, yet its melodies, vocal styles, and rhythms are ingrained in our DNA.” Japan’s indigenous folk music, min’yō, consists largely of work songs rooted in rural communities — music tied to daily life, seasonal rituals, and local identity. While some songs are known nationwide, many remain region-specific, and in modern Japan they are often unfamiliar to younger generations. Minyo Crusaders, a Tokyo-based 12-piece ensemble, reimagine this tradition through an expansive palette of global rhythms, from cumbia and reggae to Afro-Caribbean and African styles. The band was formed in 2011 in Fussa, a culturally hybrid area on the western edge of Tokyo near the Yokota U.S. air base. Guitarist Katsumi Tanaka, originally drawn to global music, began exploring min’yō in the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, seeking a form of Japanese roots music that resonated with him. Vocalist Freddy Tsukamoto — who had discovered min’yō after hearing a song from his hometown on television — shared that vision, and together they laid the foundation for the group. Following early independent recordings, the band released their debut album Echoes Of Japan in 2017. The album garnered strong acclaim domestically and was later picked up for international release, leading to their first European tour and appearances at major festivals including Trans Musicales, Le Guess Who?, and Oslo World. Their international profile has continued to grow steadily. Since 2022, Minyo Crusaders have toured extensively across more than 20 countries, performing over 60 shows at major festivals such as Primavera Sound Bogotá, Roskilde, Fusion, WOMAD UK, Green Man, Lowlands, Sziget, and Best Kept Secret, establishing themselves as one of the most dynamic representatives of Japanese music on the global stage. Their 2023 album Tour Of Japan marked a new phase in the band’s evolution, refining their arrangements while maintaining their signature energy. With From Japan With Love in 2026, Minyo Crusaders take another step forward. The album is rooted in the band’s deep affection for min’yō — a tribute to the music itself, its richness, and its enduring potential to evolve across time and cultures. Through this perspective, the songs begin to reveal the many layers of feeling they carry: expressions of human connection, family bonds, and longing for one’s hometown that have been passed down through generations across Japan. Across the album, traditional melodies are transformed through vibrant arrangements drawing on salsa, cumbia, afrobeat, and beyond. Songs such as “Hokkai Bonuta,” “Hanagasa Ondo,” “Shigesa Bushi,” and “Iyo Manzai” retain their regional identity while opening outward into a shared global language.

Every year, “Choro Noho” gives area residents a taste of what the artists teaching at Choro Camp have to offer. This year’s concert of Samba and Choro features the instrumental group, Água de Moringa, joined by vocalist Mariana Baltar. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Água de Moringa has been together for over 35 years.  While known for their versatility, the group’s foundation is in traditional Choro, a fact reflected in their instrumentation: 6 and 7-string guitars, cavaquinho, pandeiro, bandolim and clarinet. With ten albums to their credit, Água de Moringa has performed and taught throughout Brazil as well as in France, Portugal and Colombia. Vocalist and dancer Mariana Baltar performs frequently with the group, and in 2019 recorded an entire album with them, Os Arcos – Paixão e Morte, a tribute to composer Aldir Blanc. It is commonly heard in folk, country, bluegrass, Celtic music, old-time, and even Delta blues. In this course, Glenn Weiser, a multi-instrumental teacher with 40 years’ experience, will get you started on the mandolin. Topics covered will include how to read tablature and music notation, basic chords in the principal keys used in acoustic music, and the fundamentals of pick technique and the tremolo. After boning up on the basics, you will play easy folk melodies in the keys of C, G, D, A, and Am, Em, and Dm. You will also learn some basics of music theory as it’s applied to mandolin-the concepts of the I, IV and V chords, and how scales and modes are constructed. Worksheets will be provided at no extra charge. Instructor Bio: Glenn Weiser studied classical guitar in high school with Maestro Paul Battat, and later fingerstyle guitar with ragtime guitarist Eric Schoenberg. He also received instruction on mandolin from John McGann of the Berklee College of Music and pointers on blues harmonica from Jerry Portnoy, formerly of the Muddy Waters Blues Band. Now based in Connecticut, Glenn has taught students of all ages and levels how to play guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, fiddle, ukulele, and electric bass for over 40 years. Acoustic Guitar magazine has called him a “master teacher.” The styles he teaches include folk, bluegrass, blues, Celtic music, old-time string band music, classical guitar, fingerstyle guitar, and classic rock. Glenn is the author of nine books on fingerstyle guitar and six books on harmonica, and has written for Acoustic Guitar and Sing Out! magazines. He has performed at festivals, coffeehouses, and other venues in the Northeast, and has two CDs of fingerstyle guitar music available. Glenn is ranked among harmonica.com’s 100 Top Musicians. He is also the admin of Facebook’s Celtic Guitar Group and the Bluegrass, Country and Old-Time Harmonica group. Cricket Blue has performed at venues and festivals across the United States and Canada and Laura has also appeared solo on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Ranging from heartbreak pop to cinematic indie rock, Ciarra Fragale’s music has been described as "atmospheric and aspirational, precisely the sort of emotive sensibility we are collectively yearning for." Known for her soaring vocals and live looping arrangements, the Hudson Valley-native and Western MA-based musician often draws comparisons to artists like Beach Fossils, Kate Bush, and The Japanese House. The Iron Horse (18 Center St., Northampton, MA) 20 Center Street Northampton 01060 MA US | Oliver Wood w/ Ric Robertson at The Iron Horse on Wednesday, September 30 2026 Whenever Oliver Wood isn't touring with The Wood Brothers — the Grammy-nominated roots trio that he co-founded in 2006 — he typically begins his mornings the same way: in Nashville, at home, with a coffee cup in his hand and a notebook in his lap.    "There's a chair in my living room, right in front of a window," he says. "Every morning, I go down there to drink my coffee, meditate, and write. It's like a therapy session for me, because I can write without any specific goal in mind. I can be creative without being self-judgmental.”    Many of the songs from Fat Cat Silhouette, Wood's second solo record, began taking shape in that chair. Produced by his Wood Brothers’ bandmate Jano Rix, it's an album of unexpected twists and turns. Longtime fans will recognize the earnest, elastic voice that has always anchored the Wood Brothers' mix of forward-looking folk and southern country-funk, but Fat Cat Silhouette doesn't spend much time looking backward. Instead, it abandons convention, breaks a few rules, and positions Oliver Wood as a roots-music innovator who's every bit as interested in the process as the product.     "I wanted to get outside my box and embrace the uncertainty of what's out there," he explains. "I wanted weird guitar tones. The song 'Yo I Surrender' has the worst guitar sound I've ever heard in my life, and I just love it. I wanted more percussion and less drums. Once we began experimenting and doing whatever we wanted, the pressure melted away and I felt liberated.”    On the album's opener, "Light and Sweet," Wood matches an imaginative storyline with a melody that leaps from ground level into the stratosphere. Eight songs later, he brings things to a close with "Fortune Drives the Bus," which he recorded on an iPhone in his own backyard. While tracking the rest of Fat Cat Silhouette to analog tape, Wood pushed himself to keep things weird. This is an album that finds the art in the unexpected, and Oliver Wood — whose songwriting and vocal chops remain as sharp as ever — at his most adventurous.  Ric Robertson crafts songs that are as colorful and unpredictable as life itself, the kind of music that doesn’t ask for your attention — it quietly earns it. One note, one image, one breath at a time. He’s a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist — but mostly, he’s just trying to make sense of the absurd beauty in being alive.  These days, Robertson is mostly out on the road solo, carving out his own odd little orbit, hauling a real upright piano from town to town — a heavy, creaky companion that makes every show a little less predictable and a lot more alive. It’s an old-school, seat-of-the-pants kind of operation: no playback, no safety net, just songs, stories, and a whole-hearted belief that the good stuff doesn’t need a middleman.   Raised in the American South but never easy to pin down, the music floats somewhere between timeless folk wisdom and psychedelic backroom vaudeville. A strange, beautiful blend , he has a gift for turning personal detours into universal truths, and turning heartbreak, hilarity, and hallucination into something you can hum along to.   Robertson has lent his voice, songs, and musical curiosity to projects with artists like Lucius, The Wood Brothers, and Sierra Ferrell, but it’s in his solo work where his vision comes fully alive and his voice shines most true. His latest album, Choices and Chains, is a crooked little odyssey of transformation- following the technicolor psychamericana on his breakout album “Carolina Child”.   Quietly radical, unabashedly grassroots, and fiercely human, you may find Ric Robertson somewhere past the edge of the map — alone on a small stage, an upright piano, a spellbound crowd, and a kind of music that cuts through the noise and reminds you why any of this matters at all. There’s a tenderness here, and a little madness too. But mostly there’s honesty — the kind you don’t come across every day, and the kind that sticks with you long after the music fades out.
